Day 3 - Sunnyvale to Monterey

Another crew from the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and Climate Ride escorted me up to Summit Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains.


We also saved a California Salamander from being squashed by a car.


What a fantastic bunch of bikers! Thanks guys and gals!

A Ride Around Finland

Friday August 2, 2019, Biked 123 km. Warm and partly cloudy all day. Whoa, you probably thought this blog was just about my ride across the US. Well it is focused on that but this ride in Finland was very cool and was an interesting one to compare to my ride across the US, so I decided to make it one of my epilogue blog posts. TLDR: Finland has much better bicycling and transit facilities than any of the cities I visited in the US. On my walk from my hotel to the bike shop where I had a rental bike waiting, the sidewalks were designed for bicyclists and pedestrians.  The had little channels carved in them so the rain gutter water could tidily run into the street. I picked up a beautiful light carbon fiber road bike from Bicyclean Helsinki -- a wonderful and highly recommended bicycle rental shop in Helsinki. Day 69 - Harpers Ferry WV to Gaithersburg MD

Wednesday May 1, Biked 44 miles. Total mileage by end of day: 4020. Cool and cloudy all day. Started the day with breakfast at Fuel Your Adventure in Harpers Ferry. I got to talk about Zero Waste with this motley crew :-) Then off I went. A little bit of history about Harpers Ferry. Stopped at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy -- this is the center of the universe for this trail :-) Walked a bit of the Appalachian Trail on this railroad bridge to get back to the C&O Canal Trail. It was a steep descent down a spiral staircase. Had to carry my panniers down first then my bike. Here is my bike all loaded up again. Then down the trail I went. The Potomac just east of Harpers Ferry has some rapids. This is the smoothest / easiest to ride section of the C&O Canal Trail I had yet seen. Up to this point I had encountered lots of mud pits, rocks, roots, and other challenges. This is the more normal trail....

Day 73 - Washington DC to Columbia MD

Sunday May 5, Biked 30 miles. Total mileage by end of day: 4110.  Cool, windy and rainy all day. I got very wet. Seth Tucker, one of my classmates, and his family fed and lodged me for 3 nights. Thanks Seth & family! Here I am setting out in the rain. Beautiful streets but raining pretty hard. On the Capitol Crescent Trail I met... Shahram and Faranak who live in DC now and are originally from Iran. I've met so many wonderful people in DC! The Capitol Crescent rail trail is fantastic! Wide and smooth. May 8 is when Rails-to-Trails Conservancy announces the exact route of the Great American Trail. Can't wait!  Then onto the Matthew Henson Trail. Matthew Henson was an American explorer who accompanied Robert Peary on seven voyages to the Arctic over a period of nearly 23 years. They spent a total of 18 years on expeditions together. Alas this trail had many wooden bridges that were VERY slippery in the rain. ...
