Day 75 - around Baltimore

Tuesday May 7, Biked 12 miles. Total mileage by end of day: 4145.

Warm and sunny.

Met Beth the volunteer manager at the National Aquarium.

Presented to two groups of a dozen+ volunteers at the National Aquarium. This is a selfie with part of one of the groups.

Nice messages.

Cool view of Baltimore's waterfront.

Submarine!

The National Aquarium Cafe promotes reducing waste with reusable cups.

But still has lots of single use plastic wrapped foods :-(.

Staff served food into my own reusable bowl! Their plates and bowls are compostable, but reusable is even better.

Good array of zero waste condiments.

Yay for reusables!

Recycling, compost, trash, reusables -- all with examples of what goes where.

Scuba divers must scrub the aquariums fake coral to keep it clean. It is a big job. A few of the exhibits have real coral.

Gave a quick talk to David and Jen.

The Screaming Piha is very loud!

Here is a video of this small but mighty bird:

Olivia checking out one of the sloths in their Amazon exhibit. Can you spot it?

Rode part of the East Coast Greenway on my way to a talk at a Boys and Girls club.

A view of lots of freeways.

I biked just a few miles to get to the Boys and Girds club but wow was there a lot of trash in this neighborhood.

Great audience at this Boys and Girls club! Lots of great questions and bright minds!

This is Shashawanda. She is working to improve this neighborhood by reducing pollution. The local incinerator is of particular concern. Go girl!

Some houses in this neighborhood.

Looming nearby is a the incineration facility.

Wheelabrator has come a long way from its origins as an abrasives manufacturer . According to a 2011 report by the  Environmental Integrity Project, the Wheelabrator Incinerator produces more mercury, lead, and greenhouse gases per hour of energy than each of the state's four largest coal-fired power plants. In addition, the incinerator produces nitrogen oxide emissions, which can contribute to smog and pollution in the Chesapeake Bay.

A little bit more trail before I head back past the Aquarium and back to Susan and Paul's hone for my last night in Baltimore.
