Day 85 - Riverhead NY to New London CT

Friday May 17, Biked 55 miles. Total mileage by end of day: 4599.

Warmish, party cloudy, then cool and some rain end of day.

Sharon and Bob were magnificent Warmshowers.org hosts. They both love riding bikes and Sharon would like to do some bike touring.

If you are not a Warmshowers host yet, please consider becoming one! It is an easy way to meet people from all over the world and make our world a more peaceful place.

I passed acres and acres of nicely mown lawn :-)

Locally grown spinach!

Huge green houses.

Passed dozens and dozens of wineries today.

This one had alpacas.

Stopped by at a library that had been a church originally.

Passed many interesting churches as well.

This Unitarian Church doesn't have a building at the moment but looks like one is coming.

A classic looking Presbyterian church.

Stopped for a "sunburst" organic juice energizer drink at The Giving Room in Southold.

Met John who owns a nearby brewery.

Julia and Dana are also pursuing zero waste personally and their shop is near zero waste (drinks served in mason jars).

Went over the railroad tracks that go out to the very tip of Long Island.

Sharon recommended the D'Latte cafe in Greenport for its blueberry muffins.

The Bacon Cheese Strata looked good too.

Yes its blueberry muffins are awesome as was the strata!

Here is the view from the cafe as I ate.

There was a cool bike parked just outside the cafe.

Then on I went further out on Long Island.

A poor possum did not make it across the road. :-(

Saw several turkeys including a showy big tom turkey fluffing out his plumage.

Getting to the end of Long Island at Orient Point.

John and Pat's son is a marine biologist at Stony Brook. They agree we need to save our seas!

Steve & Emily rode off the ferry I was about to get onto. They were staying on Long Island for a day or two. It is great to meet others traveling by bike instead of fossil fuel vehicles :-)

Barbara and Valerie live on Long Island next to a tidal marsh. They work to keep their marsh clean and were very glad I am biking to educate others about protecting our oceans.

Richard, my Warmshowers.org host for the evening, has a custom furniture shop.

He makes very unusual artistic furniture.

He has a huge joiner.

Here is a piece in progress.

Big band saw.

Then off we went in the rain to his house. He drove, I biked.

Passed many neat houses.

And arrived at last at his house.

He bought this house for $1 and moved and rebuilt it at its current location. Lots of nice woodwork inside.

The ocean is his backyard. An incredible location and view!
